When we think of hair loss or pattern baldness—Alopecia—we often think of men. Most advertisements for hair loss treatment and hair regrowth products target men. Alopecia does not only affect men, however. Women are susceptible to sudden and ongoing hair loss, too. In fact, some of the things that cause male pattern baldness can happen to women.

When Women Lose Hair

Loss of, or thinning hair can be particularly distressing situations for women. A beautiful head of hair is still often viewed as a mark of femininity and it is less socially acceptable for a woman to lose her hair. Yet, many women struggle with alopecia at some time. The causes vary, but they may include such common things as:

  • Menopause or Post-Menopausal Changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Reactions to Common Medications
  • Stress, Physical and Emotional
  • Weight Loss or Gain

Hair loss often appears differently in women than in men. While men often experience receding hairlines and balding of the top of the head—the “bald spot”—women generally exhibit thinning at the natural hair part that then spreads on the top of the head. Sometimes thinning can be hidden with hairstyling techniques. However, hair loss tends to be progressive in certain types of alopecia, so an evaluation by a dermatologist is certainly warranted.

A dermatologist can often help you determine the potential source of the problem, as well as apply a solution. Once your dermatologist determines the cause, there are a number of medications that she can prescribe. They may range from over-the-counter treatments, to injections, to stronger measures like hair transplantation.
