Cold weather is a relief for some people. It can be a nice change from the many hot days of the year. However, it can also have some less-than-pleasant side effects for people with sensitive skin. A change in climate can cause excessive dryness, itching, and flaring of certain skin conditions. An adjustment in your skincare regime to alleviate the symptoms may be necessary.
Control skin conditions aggravated by cool weather.
Rosacea: This skin condition is chronic, with symptoms including flushed skin, swelling, itching, and burning. For most people, rosacea can be well-controlled with the correct skin care and avoidance of triggers. The dryness caused by turning on heat, or standing in front of a fireplace can cause a flare in rosacea symptoms. In addition, exposure to cold wind seems to be particularly problematic. Gentle cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, and prescription products can help reduce the symptoms and appearance of rosacea.
Psoriasis: This condition is also aggravated by cold weather. Symptoms associated with psoriasis—dry, patchy, scaly skin—can worsen, crack, and even bleed. To help improve symptoms, you can try using less hot water when you bathe so that your skin does not become overly dry. Applying a thick moisturizer as soon as possible after taking a bath or shower also helps to lock in moisture. Many times, a prescription topical is necessary to keep psoriasis under control.
Eczema: Eczema is a common condition that causes itchy, dry, inflamed, and sometimes blistered skin. Protect your skin in winter with comfortable clothes that don’t itch. Use a humidifier when you can and moisturize often. Use warm water to bathe—not hot water—and keep showers and baths brief.
