UNDERSTANDING Botox® / Dysport®
Refreshing Your Expression: Precision Neuromodulators
We all want to look as vibrant and rested as we feel. However, years of expressive squinting, frowning, and smiling can leave behind “shadows” that make us appear tired, angry, or older than our years. For our patients inBirmingham, neuromodulators offer a way to “hit the pause button” on these expression lines, smoothing the skin while maintaining the natural character of your face.
The Science of Dynamic Wrinkles
Every time you express an emotion, your facial muscles contract, folding the overlying skin. These are called dynamic rhytides. Over time, as collagen levels deplete, these folds become permanent “static” lines. By targeting the specific muscles responsible for these movements—such as the corrugator supercilii for frown lines or the orbicularis oculi for crow’s feet—we can relax the tension that causes the skin to crease.
Anatomical Precision at Inverness Dermatology
At Inverness Dermatology, we treat Neuromodulator therapy as an art form rooted in deep anatomical knowledge. Every face is asymmetrical, and every muscle carries different strength; therefore, your dosing is never “standard.”

PHYSICIAN-LED AESTHETICS
A Natural Approach
Board-certified dermatologists are specially trained to diagnose and provide customized treatments.
How Treatment Works
Neuromodulators function via competitive inhibition of acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction. By temporarily blocking the signal between the nerve and the targeted muscle, the muscle relaxes. This allows the overlying skin to smooth out and, more importantly, prevents the deepening of wrinkles over time through a process of “proactive aging.”
The Physician-Led Advantage
- Expert knowledge of facial anatomy to target the right muscles safely
- Customized dosing and placement based on facial structure and expression patterns
- Balanced, proportionate outcomes tailored to your goals
- Careful assessment of when to adjust, refine, or pause treatment
Botox® / Dysport® FAQ
Clinical answers from our board-certified dermatologists.
Both Botox® and Dysport® are FDA-approved neuromodulators that relax targeted facial muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.
They work in the same way but have slightly different molecular formulations. Dysport may spread a bit more and can have a slightly faster onset for some patients. Your provider will recommend the best option based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals.
You may be a candidate if you:
- Have dynamic wrinkles from facial expressions
- Want preventative wrinkle treatment
- Prefer non-surgical facial rejuvenation
- Are in good general health
A consultation ensures treatment is appropriate for your goals.
Most patients notice improvement within:
- Dysport: 2–3 days
- Botox: 3–5 days
Full results typically develop within 10–14 days.
Results typically last 3–4 months. With consistent treatments, many patients notice longer-lasting smoothness as muscles become trained to relax.
When performed by experienced, medically trained injectors, Botox and Dysport create natural, refreshed results — not a frozen appearance. The goal is softening lines while preserving expression.
Physician-guided dosing and anatomical precision are key.
Discomfort is minimal. Treatments use a very fine needle and typically take 10–15 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch.
There is little to no downtime. You may have mild redness or small injection marks that resolve within hours. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
You should avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
The effects of your injections begin to take place after 2-7 days. You will notice gradual improvement of wrinkles, but full effects will be seen after 14 days.
